About

Lukas Haas was born on April 16, 1976, in West Hollywood, California. His mother, Emily Tracy, is a writer, and his father, Berthold Haas, is an artist. He also has twin brothers, Simon and Nikolai. Haas was discovered at the age of five by casting director Margery Simkin while in kindergarten. His acting debut was in the 1983 nuclear Holocaust film “Testament” as Scottie Wetherly. He gained significant recognition in 1985 for his role as Samuel in “Witness,” where he portrayed an Amish child who witnessed a murder. This performance, opposite Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis, led to subsequent starring roles in films such as “Lady in White” (1988), “The Wizard of Loneliness” (1988), and “Alan & Naomi” (1992), co-written by his mother. He continued to build his filmography with roles in “Music Box” (1989) alongside Jessica Lange, and “Convicts” (1991) and “Rambling Rose” (1991) with Robert Duvall.

Haas’s career progressed with collaborations with prominent directors. He worked with Woody Allen in “Everyone Says I Love You” (1996), Tim Burton in “Mars Attacks!” (1996) as Richie Norris, and Alan Rudolph in “Breakfast of Champions” (1999) where he also contributed to the music. A notable stage appearance was in 1988, when he performed alongside Steve Martin and Robin Williams in Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” at Lincoln Center in New York City, directed by Mike Nichols. In the 2000s, he appeared in significant films such as “Brick” (2005), Rian Johnson’s directorial debut, and Gus Van Sant’s “Last Days” (2005), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. He also took on a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” (2010), sharing the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio and Elliot Page.

More recently, Haas has continued his acting career with appearances in “Red Riding Hood” (2011), “Contraband” (2012), and a role in “Lincoln” (2012) as the First White Soldier. He also portrayed Daniel Kottke in the 2013 film “Jobs.” In 2015, he played Jones in “The Revenant” and Mike Collins in “First Man” (2018), a film about the Apollo 11 mission. Haas reunited with director Damien Chazelle for “Babylon” (2022) as George Munn, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In television, he has held recurring roles in “Touch” (2013) and “The Righteous Gemstones” (2023), and is slated for the upcoming series “Spider-Noir” (2026). Beyond acting, Haas is a musician, playing drums and piano in the band The Rogues and contributing to various film soundtracks and music videos.
