Following high school, Smith played college football for the USC Trojans from 2007 to 2010. During his time at USC, he gained recognition, notably leading the defense in a key game against the UCLA Bruins in 2009. He was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft, beginning a notable professional career.
