Malik Hooker

Born on April 2, 1996, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Malik Hooker developed into a significant talent through his high school and college football careers. He attended New Castle High School, where he excelled in both basketball and football, primarily as a cornerback and wide receiver. His athletic prowess led him to be recognized as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Male Athlete of the Year as a senior. Despite initial offers from multiple prominent football programs, Hooker committed to play college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. After redshirting his inaugural year in 2014, he saw limited action in 2015, mainly on special teams. His redshirt sophomore year in 2016 marked a turning point, as he became the starting free safety and quickly demonstrated his ball-hawking skills with two interceptions in the season’s first game. His exceptional performance earned him first-team All-Big Ten honors and a unanimous All-American selection in 2016.

Following his distinguished college career, Hooker declared for the 2017 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Indianapolis Colts as the 15th overall pick. His rookie season with the Colts in 2017 showed immediate impact, recording three interceptions in his first four games. Despite a promising start, his early career was marked by significant injuries, including a torn ACL and MCL in his rookie year and a torn Achilles in 2020. These setbacks underscored his resilience as he worked to return to the field. In 2021, Hooker transitioned to the Dallas Cowboys, where he continued to play a key role in their defensive scheme. He signed a three-year, $21 million contract extension with the Cowboys in 2023, solidifying his position as a core defensive player. Throughout his tenure with the Cowboys, Hooker has contributed consistently with tackles, pass deflections, and crucial interceptions, highlighting his value to the team’s secondary.

His career progression with the Dallas Cowboys showcases his ability to overcome injuries and maintain a high level of play. In the 2022 season, he recorded a career-high 62 combined tackles and achieved his first career defensive touchdown with a 38-yard fumble recovery for a score. He also matched his career-high of three interceptions. In 2024, he started all 17 games, registering a career-high 81 combined tackles, five pass deflections, and two interceptions, further cementing his reputation as a reliable and impactful safety in the National Football League.
