Mexico From a diverse athletic background to a celebrated professional wrestling career, Manny Rodriguez, known as Kalisto, has established himself as a dynamic force in the ring.
Together with Mercedes Varnado, Kalisto launched Kanndela, a CBD company focused on producing quality CBD products for health-conscious consumers.
Emanuel Alejandro Rodriguez, born on November 14, 1986, in Chicago, Illinois, discovered his passion for professional wrestling at an early age. Growing up, he was exposed to both Mexican lucha libre and American professional wrestling, drawing inspiration from figures like Octagón and Rey Mysterio. His athletic pursuits included gymnastics, taekwondo, jujutsu, amateur wrestling, and American football. In 2006, Rodriguez began his professional wrestling training at Windy City Pro Wrestling in Chicago, where he learned both American and Mexican styles. Adopting the ring name Samuray del Sol, he quickly built a reputation on the Midwestern independent circuit. He faced a significant challenge in April 2011 when a severe injury in Mexico led to post-concussion syndrome and depression, nearly ending his career. However, a call for a WWE tryout reignited his determination.
His career then progressed significantly, joining Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in 2011, where he was repackaged as Octagón Jr., the protégé of the renowned luchador Octagón. During this period, he also competed for promotions such as Combat Zone Wrestling, Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South, National Wrestling Alliance, Evolve Wrestling, and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. A notable milestone was winning the 2012 Jeff Peterson Memorial Cup. In May 2013, he signed with WWE and was assigned to their developmental territory, NXT, where he was renamed Kalisto. He debuted in NXT in September 2013 and, in April 2014, formed a successful tag team with Sin Cara, known as the Lucha Dragons.
As part of the Lucha Dragons, Kalisto won the NXT Tag Team Championship in September 2014. He made his main roster debut in February 2015 and achieved his first singles title in WWE by winning the WWE United States Championship in January 2016, holding it twice. In October 2017, Kalisto became the WWE Cruiserweight Champion. Later, he formed the Lucha House Party with Gran Metalik and Lince Dorado, competing in various tag team matches. He was drafted to the SmackDown brand in 2019 and continued to compete until his release from WWE in April 2021. Post-WWE, he has appeared in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in November 2021 and Major League Wrestling (MLW) in 2022, where he won the MLW Caribbean Championship.
