Manuel Luis Jacinto was born on August 19, 1987, in Manila, Philippines. His family emigrated to Canada in 1990 when he was approximately three years old, and he was raised in Richmond, British Columbia. Jacinto initially pursued a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the University of British Columbia. During his time in college, he also actively participated in hip-hop dance competitions before making a career transition to acting. Early in his career, Jacinto noted a lack of prominent Asian actors in Vancouver’s film industry, which influenced his decision to move to Los Angeles to further his acting aspirations.
Jacinto’s acting career began with various small roles on television, including appearances in series such as “Once Upon a Time,” “Supernatural,” and “iZombie.” A notable early role was as triad leader Wing Lei in the Canadian spy drama “The Romeo Section” in 2015, which earned him a Leo Award nomination for Best Supporting Performance in a Dramatic Series. His breakout role came in 2016 as Jason Mendoza on the NBC sitcom “The Good Place.” His portrayal of Jason Mendoza, an EDM-obsessed character, received favorable reviews for challenging typical portrayals of Asian men in Hollywood, solidifying his presence in mainstream television.
Following his success on “The Good Place,” Jacinto expanded his filmography with roles in major productions. In 2018, he appeared in “Bad Times at the El Royale.” He was cast in the “Top Gun” sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” released in 2022, where he played Lieutenant Billy ‘Fritz’ Avalone. His work also includes the psychological drama mini-series “Nine Perfect Strangers” (2021) as Yao, and a main role in the Netflix horror drama miniseries “Brand New Cherry Flavor” (2019). Most recently, Jacinto portrayed Qimir in the “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” (2024) and voiced Scott Denoga in the Disney Channel animated series “Hailey’s On It!” (2023–2024). He is also slated to appear in the 2025 film “Freakier Friday” alongside Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, further demonstrating his diverse acting range.
