Born on January 29, 1985, in Barcelona, Spain, Marc Gasol Sáez embarked on his basketball journey early. As a teenager, he moved to Germantown, Tennessee, attending Lausanne Collegiate School, where he excelled in high school basketball, averaging 26 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks per game in his senior year (2003). His number 33 jersey was retired by Lausanne in 2008. Following high school, Gasol returned to Spain to play in the Liga ACB for FC Barcelona (2003–2006) and CB Girona (2006–2008), where he was named the ACB Most Valuable Player in 2008. His early career laid the foundation for his professional success in both European and American basketball.
Gasol’s NBA career began when he was drafted 48th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2007 NBA Draft. His rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008, where he played for over a decade, establishing himself as a defensive anchor and an All-Star. In the 2012–13 season, he earned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, a significant milestone as the first Grizzlies player and European to receive the honor. He continued to achieve notable success, including an All-NBA First Team selection in 2015. His tenure with the Grizzlies solidified his reputation as a formidable center in the league, known for his court vision, passing, and defensive capabilities.
A pivotal moment in Gasol’s career came in 2019 when he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. His experience and leadership proved instrumental, contributing significantly to the team’s historic NBA championship win in 2019. This achievement marked him and his brother, Pau Gasol, as the first set of brothers to win NBA titles. After a brief stint with the Los Angeles Lakers (2020–2021), he returned to Spain to play for Bàsquet Girona, a club he founded, helping them achieve promotion to Liga ACB. He officially retired from professional basketball on January 31, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of championships and individual accolades.
