As a teenager, he moved to Germantown, Tennessee, attending Lausanne Collegiate School, where he excelled in high school basketball, averaging 26 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks per game in his senior year (2003). His number 33 jersey was retired by Lausanne in 2008. Following high school, Gasol returned to Spain to play in the Liga ACB for FC Barcelona (2003–2006) and CB Girona (2006–2008), where he was named the ACB Most Valuable Player in 2008. His early career laid the foundation for his professional success in both European and American basketball.
Gasol’s NBA career began when he was drafted 48th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2007 NBA Draft. His rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008, where he played for over a decade, establishing himself as a defensive anchor and an All-Star. In the 2012–13 season, he earned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, a significant milestone as the first Grizzlies player and European to receive the honor.
