Dyson James Daniels was born on March 17, 2003, in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. He began his basketball journey at the age of seven and attended Bendigo South East College. Daniels’ early career included playing for the Bendigo Braves in 2019, following in his father’s footsteps. He further developed his skills at the NBA Global Academy, located at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, building a strong foundation for his professional career. His commitment to basketball led him to forego Australian rules football, a sport in which he also demonstrated significant talent, representing his home state of Victoria in national championships.
Daniels progressed to the NBA G League Ignite, a developmental team, signing with them on June 21, 2021. During his time with the Ignite, he participated in the Rising Stars Challenge at the 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend, contributing to his team’s victory. In 26 G League games, he maintained averages of 12 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and two steals per game. His performance led to him declaring for the 2022 NBA draft on April 16, 2022. He was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans as the eighth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft. Daniels joined the Pelicans’ 2022 NBA Summer League roster before signing a rookie-scale contract on July 9, 2022.
On July 6, 2024, Daniels was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. In his 2024-25 season, Daniels demonstrated significant defensive abilities, earning the nickname “The Great Barrier Thief.” He led the NBA in steals per game with 3.01 and total steals with 202, setting a record as the youngest player to achieve 200 steals in a single season. His defensive contributions also included leading the league in deflections and ranking high in combined steals and blocks. On April 30, 2025, Daniels became the first Australian to win the NBA Most Improved Player award. He also finished as the runner-up for the 2025 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Daniels has also represented Australia internationally, winning a gold medal at the 2018 FIBA Oceania Under-15 Championship, and making his senior national team debut in 2021 during FIBA Asia Cup qualification.
