Marco Asensio Willemsen was born on January 21, 1996, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to a Dutch mother and Spanish father. He began his youth career at Playas de Calvià from 2003 to 2006 before joining Real Mallorca’s youth system in 2006. Asensio faced childhood challenges with growth deficiencies in his knees, which resolved during his teenage years. He progressed through Mallorca’s ranks, making his senior debut with Mallorca B in the 2013-14 season in the Tercera División while still a junior. His first competitive appearance for the first team occurred on October 27, 2013, in a Segunda División match against Recreativo de Huelva. Asensio soon established himself as a key player, scoring his first professional goal on March 16, 2014, against Tenerife.
His promising performances attracted attention from top clubs, leading to his transfer to Real Madrid in November 2014, signing a six-year deal for €3.9 million. He was then loaned back to Mallorca and subsequently to Espanyol for the 2015-16 season, where he provided 12 assists. Returning to Real Madrid in 2016, Asensio quickly integrated into the first team, scoring on his competitive debut in the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla. He played a significant role in Real Madrid’s consecutive successes, contributing to three Champions League victories (2016–17, 2017–18, 2021–22) and three La Liga titles (2016–17, 2019–20, 2021–22). Notably, he scored in the 2017 Champions League final against Juventus and his first senior hat-trick against his former club Mallorca in September 2021.
Asensio moved to Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023 on a contract until June 2026. During his time at PSG, he won the Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France in the 2023-24 season. He subsequently joined Aston Villa on loan in February 2025 for a season, scoring two goals in a comeback win against Chelsea. In September 2025, Asensio transferred to Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe on a three-year contract, with an option for a further year, where he debuted on September 14, 2025, and scored his first goal a week later against Kasımpaşa. He has also been a consistent presence for the Spain national team, representing them at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2023, and an Olympic silver medal in 2020.
