During his freshman year at the University of North Carolina, he played in 11 games, starting one and recording an assist. Prior to this, Sunol Rojas trained with the U-23 Costa Rican National Team and Deportivo Saprissa FC, further honing his skills. He was also a member of the North Carolina ODP program for two years and played a pivotal role in his North Carolina Fusion club securing consecutive regional and state championships, culminating in national championship qualification. In 2015, Sunol Rojas transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he delivered a significant impact in the 2016 season by playing in 17 games with 16 starts.
He notably scored two goals against Coastal Carolina on September 5, 2017, and a decisive goal in the 49ers’ Conference USA Tournament semifinal win over FIU on November 10, 2017, ultimately leading the team to the championship game.
