Marco Sunol Rojas, originally from San Jose, Costa Rica, established himself as a collegiate soccer player across two Division I programs. He started his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, where he played in 11 games during his freshman year, starting one and recording an assist. During this period, he also trained with the U-23 Costa Rican National Team and Deportivo Saprissa FC. Prior to college, Sunol-Rojas was a highly-rated four-star recruit from Greensboro Day. He was part of the North Carolina ODP program for two years and helped his North Carolina Fusion club secure consecutive regional and state championships, leading to national championship qualification.
In 2015, Sunol-Rojas transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he sat out his first season due to NCAA transfer rules. He made a significant impact in the 2016 season, playing in 17 games with 16 starts. His notable achievements included scoring a bicycle goal against Hofstra on August 29, which was featured on ESPN’s Top Ten Plays of the Day, and earning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors on September 6. He also scored four goals that season, including two against Hofstra and one each against Rutgers and UAB, and tallied four assists, two of which were game-winning assists against Rutgers and Old Dominion. In 2017, he continued to contribute, playing in 17 games with eight starts. He earned Conference USA All-Tournament honors and scored two goals against Coastal Carolina and one in the Conference USA Tournament semifinal win over FIU, helping the 49ers reach the championship game.
