Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England on January 27, 1965, Robert Fitzgerald Earle began his football journey as a youth player for Stoke City. After recovering from a broken leg, he joined Port Vale in 1982, marking the start of a distinguished professional career. As an attacking midfielder, Earle quickly became a key figure for Port Vale, contributing significantly to their promotions out of the Fourth Division in 1982–83 and 1985–86, and then from the Third Division via the play-offs in 1989. He was affectionately known as ‘The Black Pearl’ by fans and played 357 times for the club, scoring 90 goals, establishing himself as one of their best midfielders. His dedication and performances earned him a transfer to Wimbledon in 1991 for a fee of £775,000.
At Wimbledon, Earle continued to excel, playing a crucial role in the club’s ‘Crazy Gang’ era. He captained the team for five years and was recognized as Wimbledon Player of the Decade in 2000. During his time at Wimbledon, he scored 59 goals in 244 league appearances, including two against Liverpool at Anfield in the inaugural Premier League season of 1992-93. His consistent performance and leadership also earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award in February 1997. Though English-born, Earle represented the Jamaican National Team from 1997 to 2000, captaining the squad for two years. He notably scored Jamaica’s first-ever World Cup Finals goal against Croatia in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. His playing career concluded in 2000 after a severe pancreas injury.
Following his retirement from professional football, Earle successfully transitioned into a career in sports journalism and broadcasting. He has worked with major media organizations such as NBC Sports, BBC, ESPN, ITV, and Sky Sports, providing analysis and commentary on football, particularly the Premier League. He co-hosts ‘The 2 Robbies’ podcast and has been a studio analyst for NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage. In addition to his media work, Earle is an advocate for social causes, having served as an Honorary Patron of Show Racism the Red Card and an ambassador for the Football Foundation. He was awarded an MBE in 1999 for his services to football and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame as a ‘Football Foundation Community Champion’ in 2009. He has also engaged in charitable work across three continents, focusing on initiatives like ‘Reading the Game’ and the Premier League’s ‘Premier Skills’ program.
