Marcus Baghdatis is a retired Cypriot tennis player who has reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No.8. Baghdatis began playing tennis at the age of five with his father and brother in Cyprus, and was also keen on watching football. Eventually his talent for tennis was noticed and he trained at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Paris on an Olympic Solidarity South Development Programme Scholarship since 14, where he learned to speak French.
Baghdatis soon excelled, winning the 2005 Cyprus Male Athlete of the Year award, and being the first player from Cyprus to qualify to reach an ATP Tour event final. The tennis player soon found huge success , defeating Andy Murray in the fourth round in straight sets at Wimbledon, as well as beating the 2002 champion and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewiit. Fans were soon gripped by his following match against retiring Andre Agassi in the second round of the US Open, as the match lasted long past midnight. Baghdatis was the only player during the 2010 season to beat both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal whilst they were world No. 1
Since retiring, Baghdatis has taken time for his family and friends and reflecting on his life of celebrated tennis success, showing throwback highlights on his Instagram where he has over 31 thousand followers. Baghdatis is known for his cheerful and hardworking attitude, with his family having no previous background in sports, the sportsman has risen high to compete with some of the best professional tennis players of all time.
