About

Born in Pembury, Kent, in 1970, Kelly Holmes embarked on her athletics journey at the age of 12, joining Tonbridge Athletics Club and winning the English Schools 1500 meters in 1983. However, at 18, she paused her promising athletic career to join the British Army, where she served for nearly a decade. During her military service, she became a HGV driver in the Women’s Royal Army Corps and later excelled as a physical training instructor, also becoming the British Army judo champion. Inspired by the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, watching a competitor she had previously beaten, Holmes decided to return to competitive athletics, initially balancing it with her army career before becoming a full-time athlete in 1997.

Holmes’ athletic career was marked by both significant achievements and persistent injury struggles. She secured gold at the Commonwealth Games and silver medals at the World and European Championships in the years leading up to her Olympic breakthroughs. Her first Olympic medal was a bronze in the 800m at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, despite a ruptured calf injury just weeks before the games. The turning point in her career arrived at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where she competed without injury for the first time in many years. This allowed her to make the strategic decision to double up in the 800m and 1500m events.

At the Athens Games, Holmes clinched two Olympic gold medals, an extraordinary feat as she became only the third woman in history to win both the 800m and 1500m at the same Olympics, and Britain’s first double gold medallist at a single Games since 1920. At 34, she was also the oldest woman to achieve this double victory in these events. Following her retirement from athletics in 2005, Holmes established the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust in 2008, a registered charity dedicated to supporting young athletes and empowering disadvantaged young people across the UK. She has also served as President of Commonwealth Games England and has become a motivational speaker, authoring five books.
