Almario Vernard Chalmers, born on May 19, 1986, in Anchorage, Alaska, established himself as a prominent basketball talent early in his career. He attended Bartlett High School, where he was recognized as the 4A State Player of the Year three times consecutively, an achievement shared with only one other player. During his high school tenure, he led his team to two state championships in 2002 and 2003, with a runner-up finish in 2004. As a senior in 2004–05, Chalmers was honored as a McDonald’s All-American and a third-team Parade All-American, underscoring his potential as a top-tier player.
Chalmers continued his impressive trajectory at the University of Kansas from 2005 to 2008. After working his way into the starting lineup, he became a key player for the Kansas Jayhawks. In his freshman year, he averaged 11.5 points per game and set a Big 12 record for steals by a freshman with 89. His defensive prowess was further acknowledged in his sophomore year when he was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Big 12. A defining moment of his collegiate career came in 2008 when he led Kansas to the NCAA Championship, hitting a crucial three-pointer in the final seconds to force overtime against the Memphis Tigers. His performance earned him the Most Outstanding Player award for the tournament, cementing his legacy as a collegiate champion. His No. 15 jersey was retired by the Kansas basketball program on February 16, 2013.
In the NBA, Chalmers was drafted 34th overall in the 2008 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, with his draft rights subsequently traded to the Miami Heat. He played an integral role as the starting point guard for the Heat, contributing to two NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 alongside LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. He is the only Alaskan to win championships at the high school, college, and professional levels. Chalmers spent seven seasons with the Heat before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2015. After an Achilles injury in 2016, he returned to the Grizzlies in 2017 and later played internationally for teams like Virtus Bologna, AEK Athens, and Aris Thessaloniki, and in the NBA G League with Grand Rapids Gold and Sioux Falls Skyforce.
