About

Born on September 17, 1970, in Los Angeles, California, Mark Brunell’s football journey began at St. Joseph High School, where he excelled as a quarterback, leading his team to two league championships. He continued his collegiate career at the University of Washington, joining a highly regarded recruiting class. Brunell showcased his abilities as a dual-threat quarterback, taking over starting duties in his sophomore season in 1990. He led the Huskies to a dominant 31-0 victory over a ranked USC team and earned the Rose Bowl MVP title in 1991 following a 46-34 win against Iowa. Despite a severe knee injury in 1991, he returned ahead of schedule, contributing to Washington’s second consecutive Rose Bowl victory and a National Championship title. Known for his resilience, Brunell started his second Rose Bowl game as a senior in 1992.

Brunell was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. After two seasons as a backup, he was traded to the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995. He quickly became the franchise’s first starting quarterback, making a significant impact by leading them to four consecutive playoff appearances in their initial five seasons, a first for an NFL expansion team. During his tenure with the Jaguars from 1995 to 2003, Brunell earned three Pro Bowl selections (1997, 1998, 2000) and was named the Pro Bowl MVP in 1997. He led the team to two AFC Championship Games, including a notable upset victory against the Denver Broncos in the 1996 AFC Divisional Playoff, where he threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 44 yards. He holds numerous Jacksonville Jaguars passing records, including passing yards, completions, attempts, and touchdowns. In 2013, he was inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars.

After leaving the Jaguars in 2004, Brunell continued his NFL career with the Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets. With the Washington Redskins in 2005, following an early-season injury to the starting quarterback, Brunell showed his veteran leadership by leading the team to a 10-6 record and a playoff victory. He notably broke the NFL record for most consecutive completions in a single game in 2006 with 22 completions. As a backup and holder for the New Orleans Saints, he was part of the team that won Super Bowl XLIV in 2010. Following his retirement from playing in 2011, Brunell transitioned into coaching. He served as a high school assistant and head coach before becoming the quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions in 2021, a role he continues to hold in 2025. Throughout his career, Brunell tallied 32,072 passing yards and 184 touchdowns.
