About

Mark Dacascos was born Mark Alan Dacascos on February 26, 1964, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Al Dacascos, is a martial arts instructor and the founder of Wun Hop Kuen Do, a style in which Mark holds a 4th-degree black belt. His mother, Moriko McVey-Murray, is of Irish and Japanese ancestry. Dacascos’ early life included living in Hamburg, Germany, where he learned German. He attended Los Angeles Valley College, participating in gymnastics, and later Portland State University. Growing up, he developed a significant interest in martial arts and was inspired by figures like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. His training extends to Muay Thai, Capoeira with Amen Santo, and Wushu.

Dacascos began his acting career after being discovered in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1983, leading to a film and television career primarily focused on martial arts roles. His breakthrough came in the 1993 film “Only the Strong,” where he played Louis, a Capoeira master. He continued to gain recognition for his roles in various action films such as “Crying Freeman” (1995), “Brotherhood of the Wolf” (2001), and “Cradle 2 the Grave” (2003) alongside Jet Li. On television, Dacascos is widely recognized for his portrayal of “The Chairman” on “Iron Chef America” since 2005, a role he reprised for Netflix’s “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend” in 2022. He also played the recurring antagonist Wo Fat in “Hawaii Five-0” (2010–2020) and Zero in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” (2019).

Throughout his career, Dacascos has demonstrated versatility across film and television, including roles in “The Crow: Stairway to Heaven” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” In 2023, his contributions to martial arts and entertainment were acknowledged with his induction into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame. He has also engaged in video game voice acting, such as in “Stranglehold,” and live acting for “Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom.” His work reflects a sustained career in martial arts-focused entertainment, maintaining a consistent presence in action and television programming.
