Mark Richard Hamill was born on September 25, 1951, in Oakland, California, to Virginia Suzanne (Johnson) and William Thomas Hamill, a captain in the United States Navy. His early life involved frequent moves due to his father’s military career, leading him to attend various schools, including Nile C. Kinnick High School in Japan, from which he graduated in 1969. He later pursued a drama major at Los Angeles City College. His acting career began in the early 1970s with a recurring role on the soap opera “General Hospital” and guest appearances on shows like “The Bill Cosby Show” and “The Partridge Family.” These early roles provided a foundation in television before his breakthrough.
Hamill’s career trajectory changed significantly when he was cast as Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope,” released in May 1977. This role brought him international recognition and immense success. He reprised this character in the sequels “Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” (1980) and “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” (1983), earning Saturn Awards for Best Actor for both. In an effort to avoid typecasting after the initial Star Wars trilogy, Hamill transitioned to stage work, performing on Broadway in productions such as “The Elephant Man” and “Amadeus.” His voice acting career also gained prominence, particularly for his long-standing role as the Joker, beginning with “Batman: The Animated Series” in 1992.
He continued to expand his voice acting portfolio, taking on roles like the Hobgoblin in “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” and Fire Lord Ozai in “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Hamill returned to the Star Wars universe, reprising his role as Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” (2015), “Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi” (2017), and “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” (2019). He also lent his voice to characters in video games, including Commander Christopher Blair in the “Wing Commander” series and the Joker in the “Batman: Arkham” series. In 2017, he was inducted as a Disney Legend and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018.
