Mark Murphy

Mark Murphy, the only person to win a Super Bowl as both a player and a team’s chief executive, began his impactful eight-year NFL playing career as a safety for the Washington Redskins (1977-1984). Signing as an undrafted free agent, he quickly rose to co-captain from 1980-1984, contributing to the Redskins’ Super Bowl XVII victory in 1982. Murphy achieved peak individual performance in 1983, leading the NFL with nine interceptions, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. During this period, he also served as Washington’s player representative to the NFL Players Association from 1980-1984 and as Vice President of the players union from 1983-1984.

His career then shifted to collegiate athletics, where he served as director of athletics at Colgate University from 1992-2003, and subsequently at Northwestern University from 2003-2007, where he oversaw significant athletic and academic achievements. During this time, he also contributed to broader league initiatives, serving on the NFL Commissioner’s Player Advisory Committee from 1994-2002 and the NFL Youth Football Committee from 2002-2011. In December 2007, Murphy was named President and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, formally assuming the position in January 2008.

Murphy’s later tenure included a significant restructuring of football operations in 2018. He was honored with the Rotary Club of Green Bay’s Free Enterprise Award in 2021 and co-chaired the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s capital campaign. Murphy continues to serve on USA Football’s Board of Directors. In 2025, he will be inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, marking another significant recognition of his contributions.

Murphy is set to transition from his CEO role effective July 2025, moving into an advisory capacity and taking on a new position at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
