The acclaimed American actress, singer, comedian, writer and producer, Marla Gibbs, is renowned for her extensive career in TV and film.
Best-known for her role as Florence Johnston in the popular CBS comedy series The Jeffersons from 1975-1985, Gibbs’ recently joined the cast in 2019 for a one-off special, The Jeffersons, Live in Front of a Studio Audience. However, it was in the early 1970s that Gibbs made her debut acting appearance the blaxploitation films Black Belt Jones, Sweet Jesus and Preacher Man. She has since gone on to enjoy a highly successful acting career, having starred in TV series, The Jeffersons spin-off Checking In, 227 and The First Family. She has also guest-starred in popular shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, ER and Scandal. Of her more recent ventures, Gibbs has appeared in the TV series Black-ish, and El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie. During her career, Gibbs has written and produced for the series 227, The Jeffersons and Just Like Family. Throughout the 80s & 90s, Gibbs also owned the LA jazz club, Marla’s Memory Lane Jazz and Supper Club. It was during this time that as a singer Gibbs went on to release several albums.
With a career that spans over five decades, Gibbs’ array of accolades is no surprise. She has won an impressive seven NAACP Image Awards and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her role in The Jeffersons.
