Marten Van Riel, born on December 15, 1992, in Loenhout, Antwerp, Belgium, began his triathlon career in 2009. He quickly demonstrated his capabilities, representing Belgium at two Olympic Games. In his Olympic debut at Rio 2016, Van Riel secured a 6th-place finish, followed by a 4th-place finish at Tokyo 2020. His progression in the sport became particularly notable from 2017 onwards, marked by consistent world-class performances in both World Cup and World Series triathlon events. A significant milestone was his victory at the Miyazaki World Cup at the close of 2017.
The years 2018 and 2019 saw Van Riel achieve several top finishes and podium placements. In 2018, he earned a 5th place at WTS Leeds, 7th in WTS Hamburg and Edmonton, and secured bronze medals in both the individual and Mixed Relay categories at the European Championships in Glasgow. The following year, he recorded five top-10 finishes, including a third-place finish at WTS Edmonton, which contributed to his fifth-place standing in the overall rankings. In 2019, he also earned a silver medal in the men’s triathlon at the Military World Games in Wuhan, China.
His career further escalated in 2021, where he achieved an overall second place in the World Triathlon Championship Series rankings. This was supported by bronze medals in Leeds and Montreal, a silver medal at the Championship Finals Edmonton, and his strong 4th-place performance at the Tokyo Olympics. More recently, Van Riel became the first T100 World Champion in 2024, a season where he secured three first-place finishes and one second-place finish, including the Grand Final in Dubai. He also won the Ironman 70.3 in Dubai in March 2022.
