Sofia Kenin, born in Moscow, Russia on November 14, 1998, is an American professional tennis player. Her family moved to the United States a few months after her birth. She began playing tennis at age five, inspired by her father, and trained with Rick Macci and later Nick Bollettieri, with her father remaining her primary coach for much of her career. Kenin quickly demonstrated talent, becoming a top-ranked junior player and achieving success in USTA national rankings across various age divisions.
Kenin turned professional in September 2017, foregoing a university scholarship. In 2019, she had a significant breakthrough, winning three WTA singles titles and two WTA doubles titles, including the China Open. This impressive year culminated in her being named the WTA Most Improved Player of the Year. Her career reached a pinnacle in 2020 when she won the Australian Open, her first Grand Slam singles title, and later reached the French Open final, earning her the WTA Player of the Year award. She achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 4 in singles and No. 21 in doubles.
Following a period of injuries and a dip in ranking, Kenin has shown resilience in her career. In 2023, she reached a WTA 1000 semifinal at the Guadalajara Open and returned to the top 30 in singles rankings. In 2024, she secured another doubles title at the Miami Open with Bethanie Mattek-Sands and made it to the singles final at the Pan Pacific Open, re-entering the top 100.
