Martins Licis was born in Riga on September 28, 1990, and moved to the United States at the age of four, holding dual citizenship with Latvia and the United States. He grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts, and during summers, he visited his grandparents’ farm in Latvia, where his grandfather, a former Olympic weightlifter, introduced him to stone lifting. After experiencing bullying at age 12, Licis began weight training. He wrestled in high school and started competing in strongman contests as a teenager. In 2010, Licis moved to California where he became a personal trainer. Through Odd Haugen, he began training at Haugen’s gym and competed in the All-American Strength Classic in 2015.
Licis began his professional strongman career in 2015, winning the Odd Haugen All-American Strength Classic. He first reached the World’s Strongest Man (WSM) finals in 2016, placing sixth, and then fourth in both 2017 and 2018. In 2017, he achieved his first professional triumph at the Ultimate Strongman Summermania. His career reached a significant turning point in 2019 when he secured his first World’s Strongest Man title, maintaining a top-three finish in all five events and winning two outright. He continued this success by winning the Arnold Strongman Santa Monica Qualifier in January 2020 and placing third at the Arnold Strongman Classic in March 2020. After recovering from injuries, Licis made a significant comeback in 2021 by winning the Rogue Invitational, which featured the largest prize purse in strongman history. He further solidified his position in the sport by winning the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic, an event where he had previously placed second in 2019 and third in 2020.
Following his Arnold Strongman Classic victory in 2022, Licis placed second at the 2022 World’s Strongest Man competition, and fourth at the 2022 Rogue Invitational. In March 2024, he competed at the Arnold Strongman Classic, finishing eighth. Licis withdrew from the 2024 World’s Strongest Man competition due to sciatica, announcing an eight-month recovery period. Beyond competition, Licis is involved in the YouTube series ‘Strength Unknown,’ which explores global strength cultures. He also launched Wreck-It Gym and the Wreck-It Power app, which provides training programs. He has appeared on television shows such as “World’s Strongest Man,” “Game On!,” and “To Tell the Truth,” and in a Geico commercial. He is also pursuing acting, with potential roles in upcoming films.
