Mary Beard

Mary Beard is a distinguished classical scholar and television presenter, renowned for her ability to make ancient Rome accessible and engaging to a broad public. After completing her Doctor of Philosophy degree at Cambridge in 1982 with her thesis ‘The State Religion in the Late Roman Republic: A Study Based on the Works of Cicero’, Mary Beard went on to establish herself as a preeminent classicist specializing in Ancient Rome. Early in her career, she lectured in classics at King’s College, London from 1979 to 1983, before returning to Cambridge in 1984 as a Fellow of Newnham College and the sole female lecturer in the classics faculty. Her academic standing continued to rise, culminating in her promotion to Professor of Classics at Cambridge in 2004.

Beyond formal academic roles, Beard maintains a significant public presence through her regular blog, ‘A Don’s Life’, and active engagement on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), where she discusses classical topics and broader cultural issues, cementing her role as a vital bridge between ancient history and contemporary discourse.
