She pursued her Doctor of Philosophy degree at Cambridge, completing her thesis titled ‘The State Religion in the Late Roman Republic: A Study Based on the Works of Cicero’ in 1982. Early in her career, from 1979 to 1983, Beard lectured in classics at King’s College, London, before returning to Cambridge in 1984 as a Fellow of Newnham College and the sole female lecturer in the classics faculty.

She became the classics editor of The Times Literary Supplement in 1992, a role she maintains, also writing a regular blog, ‘A Don’s Life’.
