About

Winifred Mary Beard, born on January 1, 1955, in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England, is a preeminent English classicist specializing in Ancient Rome. Her academic journey began at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and later her Master of Arts degree. She pursued her Doctor of Philosophy degree at Cambridge, completing her thesis titled ‘The State Religion in the Late Roman Republic: A Study Based on the Works of Cicero’ in 1982. Early in her career, from 1979 to 1983, Beard lectured in classics at King’s College, London, before returning to Cambridge in 1984 as a Fellow of Newnham College and the sole female lecturer in the classics faculty.

Throughout her career, Beard has been instrumental in bridging the gap between classical scholarship and public understanding. She became the classics editor of The Times Literary Supplement in 1992, a role she maintains, also writing a regular blog, ‘A Don’s Life’. Her public profile grew significantly through frequent media appearances and television documentaries, such as ‘Pompeii: Life and Death in a Roman Town’ (2010), ‘Meet the Romans with Mary Beard’ (2012), and ‘Rome: Empire Without Limit’ (2016). In 2004, Beard was promoted to Professor of Classics at Cambridge, and in 2018, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to the study of classical civilizations. She was appointed a trustee of the British Museum in 2020.

Beard’s influence extends to her active presence on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), where she engages in discussions on classical topics and broader cultural issues. Her scholarly approach emphasizes understanding ancient sources within their historical context and acknowledging the modern perspectives that shape our interpretation of history. She is a Royal Academy of Arts Professor of Ancient Literature and has received numerous accolades, including the Wolfson History Prize (2009) and the Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences (2016). Mary Beard’s dedication has not only enriched classical studies but has also made it more relatable and thought-provoking for audiences worldwide.
