Mary Fowler was born on February 14, 2003, in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Her early football career began at age seven, playing for boys’ teams such as Saints FC and Leichhardt FC in Cairns. At 11, she moved to the Netherlands with her family for three years, where she played for BVV Barendrecht. In 2019, at 16, Fowler signed her first professional contract with Adelaide United, making her W-League debut and scoring her first goal in the 2019-20 season. That same year, she also played for Illawarra Stingrays and Bankstown City briefly. Her rapid rise quickly garnered international attention, leading her to sign a three-year contract with French Ligue 1 club Montpellier HSC in January 2020, making her debut against Olympique Lyonnais a month later. By May 2021, ESPN recognized her as one of the game’s most promising young talents by including her in their 21 Under 21 list.
In July 2022, Fowler joined English FA WSL club Manchester City on a four-year contract. She scored her first goals for the club in October 2022 during a 6-0 Continental Cup victory over Blackburn. Her second season at Manchester City, 2023-24, marked a significant breakthrough, as she became a regular starter, contributing six goals and nine assists. This included scoring Manchester City’s 800th professional goal against Bristol City in April 2024. Fowler’s career has also been defined by her contributions to the Australian national team. She debuted for the Matildas in July 2018 at 15, becoming the fifth youngest player to do so. She has represented Australia in two World Cups (2019 and 2023) and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
