Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, born on November 24, 1982, in Kangathei, Manipur, India, grew up assisting her tenant farmer parents in jhum fields. Her early life involved farm-related chores, schooling, and dabbling in athletics like javelin and 400 meters running. Inspired by Manipuri boxer Dingko Singh’s success at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games, Kom transitioned to boxing in 2000. She initially kept her boxing aspirations hidden from her father, a former wrestler who feared the sport’s impact on her appearance and marriage prospects. However, after her victory in the Manipur state women’s boxing championship in 2000, her father learned of her dedication and eventually supported her career.
Kom’s boxing career is marked by numerous significant achievements. She made her international debut at the first AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, securing a silver medal in the 48 kg category in 2001. A year later, in 2002, she clinched her first gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in Turkey in the 45 kg class. Her consistent performance led to her being awarded the Arjuna Award for outstanding sporting achievement in 2003. She continued her gold medal streak, winning three consecutive titles at different international boxing events between 2004 and 2006. She further cemented her dominance with a fourth successive gold medal at the 2008 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in China, followed by a gold medal at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam.
After a brief hiatus post-marriage and childbirth in 2007, Kom returned to the ring, winning silver at the 2008 Asian Women’s Boxing Championship. In 2010, she earned another gold at the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan and her fifth consecutive gold at the AIBA World Championship in Barbados. Adapting to rule changes, she moved to the 51kg category and, in 2012, became the only Indian female boxer to qualify for the London Olympics, where she secured a bronze medal. Her achievements extended to the Asian Games, where she won a gold medal in 2014, and the Commonwealth Games, earning another gold in 2018. Kom’s exceptional career also led to her nomination as a member of Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, in 2016.
