Matthew Karsten, known as Matt, is an adventure travel blogger, photographer, and digital nomad who has been exploring the world for over a decade. His journey began after earning a bachelor’s degree in business and working as a freelance nightlife and event photographer in Miami. Feeling a desire for more adventure, Karsten decided to make a significant life change. He spent a year saving money, selling his car, and minimizing his possessions to fit into a travel backpack. In the fall of 2010, he quit his job and purchased a one-way ticket to Guatemala, initiating what was initially planned as a one-year trip. This decision marked a turning point, leading him to fully embrace a nomadic lifestyle.
Karsten’s initial experience in Guatemala, despite the challenge of lost luggage, solidified his commitment to travel. He immersed himself in local culture, trekked through jungles, and stayed in backpacker hostels, quickly becoming accustomed to the nomadic life. What began as a year-long plan extended into over ten years of continuous travel, visiting more than 70 countries. During this time, he lived abroad in various locations, including Mexico, Thailand, Italy, Spain, and South Africa. His goal is to inspire others to travel, share budget travel tips, and provide insights into nomadic living through his blog, Expert Vagabond. He focuses on documenting his experiences through photography, video, and articles, demonstrating how to make travel a priority and embrace an adventurous life.
In recent years, Matt Karsten has settled in Annecy, France, with his wife Anna, their two sons, Dylan and Holden, and their cat, Poofy. Despite settling in one location, his commitment to adventure travel and sharing his experiences remains. He continues to create content that encourages readers to seek experiences over possessions and explore new possibilities. His work highlights the belief that travel doesn’t have to be expensive, adventure is worthwhile, and the world is less dangerous than perceived. Through detailed accounts of his journeys, from trekking in Afghanistan to camping in Greenland and experiencing Venice Carnival, Karsten provides practical advice and inspiration for fellow travelers.
