Matt McCall was born on December 12, 1981, in Ocala, Florida. He began his collegiate basketball journey as a student manager at the University of Florida from 2001 to 2004, where he also earned his undergraduate degree in exercise and sports science in 2004 and a master’s degree in the same concentration in 2006. His time at Florida included four SEC titles, four SEC Tournament titles, two NCAA Elite Eights, a Final Four appearance, and two NCAA titles, initially as a manager and graduate assistant before becoming Director of Basketball Operations from 2006-2008.
McCall’s coaching career progressed with an assistant coach position at Florida Atlantic from 2008 to 2011, contributing to their best Division I season in 2010-11 with a 21-11 record and a Sun Belt Regular Season title. He returned to Florida as an assistant coach from 2011 to 2015, where he played a role in landing top-ranked recruiting classes and continued to contribute to the Gators’ success, including four more SEC titles and two NCAA Elite Eight appearances. In 2015, McCall took on his first head coaching role at Chattanooga, where he achieved a school record of 29 wins in his inaugural season, leading the team to SoCon Regular Season and Tournament Championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. He was recognized as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 2016.
On March 29, 2017, McCall was appointed the 22nd head coach for University of Massachusetts men’s basketball, a position he held until 2022. During his tenure, UMass secured its highest A-10 Championship seed since 2008 in the 2021-22 season. He guided the team to the A-10 Quarterfinals for the first time since 2016, achieving the largest margin of victory in Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament history with a 34-point win over Saint Joseph’s. In more recent years, McCall has transitioned into a role as a game and studio analyst for NBC Sports college basketball coverage, a member of the Field of 68 Media Network, Sirius XM, and CBS Sports HQ, and a South Florida Realtor.
