Erica May-Scherzer is an ambassador for the Polaris Project, which aims to stop human trafficking. Scherzer started a fundraiser called 'Strike Out Modern Slavery' where the couple matched donations to Polaris for every strikeout Scherzer threw.
In 2013, Max and Erica partnered with the Detroit Tigers Foundation on 'Scherzer's Superstars', a program for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America members at Comerica Park.
Maxwell Martin Scherzer was born on July 27, 1984, in St. Louis, Missouri. His baseball journey began at Parkway Central High School and continued at the University of Missouri, where he earned Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year honors in 2005 and was later inducted into the University of Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. Drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round as the 11th overall pick in 2006, Scherzer made his MLB debut on April 29, 2008. Over his career, he has played for multiple teams including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and Texas Rangers, eventually joining the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025.
Scherzer’s career is distinguished by remarkable achievements, including eight All-Star selections (2013-2019, 2021) and three Cy Young Awards (2013, 2016-2017), making him one of only 11 pitchers in MLB history with at least three Cy Young Awards. He is also one of only six pitchers to win the award in both the American and National Leagues. A two-time World Series champion (2019 with the Washington Nationals and 2023 with the Texas Rangers), he has demonstrated sustained excellence at the highest level of the sport. His on-field dominance is further highlighted by being one of only two pitchers in MLB history with both a 20-strikeout game and a no-hitter in his career, joining Randy Johnson. Additionally, he has thrown three immaculate innings, a rare feat tied for the most in MLB history.
Throughout his career, Scherzer has consistently ranked among the league’s top pitchers, accumulating 3,489 strikeouts, which places him 11th on the all-time MLB strikeout list as one of just 19 pitchers to reach the 3,000-career strikeout mark. He has recorded nine seasons with 200+ strikeouts, a testament to his longevity and effectiveness. His intense preparation and focus have allowed him to maintain a high level of performance across various teams, solidifying his reputation as one of baseball’s elite pitchers.
