Born on September 30, 1997, in Hasselt, Belgium, Max Emilian Verstappen inherited a passion for racing from his family. His father, Jos Verstappen, was a former Formula One driver, and his mother, Sophie Kumpen, was a prominent kart racer. Max began his karting career at age four, winning numerous national championships in Belgium and the Netherlands. By 2013, at just 15, he achieved an unprecedented feat by winning three CIK-FIA championships in a single season, including the KZ World Championship. His rapid ascent continued in 2014, when he competed in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Van Amersfoort Racing, securing 10 victories and finishing third overall, despite being the youngest driver in the series.
Verstappen’s Formula One journey began in 2014 with Toro Rosso, making him the youngest person to participate in a Formula One race weekend at 17 years and three days. He broke records as the youngest driver to start a World Championship race and score points in 2015. His career took a significant turn in 2016 when he was promoted to Red Bull Racing. In his debut race for the team at the Spanish Grand Prix, aged 18 years and 228 days, he became the youngest-ever Formula One Grand Prix winner. Over the following years, he consistently demonstrated his talent, securing multiple wins and podium finishes, overcoming reliability issues in 2017–2018, and showcasing dominance over his teammates in 2019-2020.
He achieved his maiden Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 2021 after a legendary final-lap showdown with Lewis Hamilton at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He then secured back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, setting new records for most wins in a season (19) and most points (575). In 2024, despite challenges with the car’s performance, Verstappen clinched his fourth consecutive World Championship, winning eight Grands Prix and demonstrating exceptional performance in demanding conditions, notably his wet-weather masterclass at the São Paulo Grand Prix. His career is characterized by remarkable consistency, raw speed, and an unwavering drive to win, establishing him as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
