American actor, director and producer Mel Gibson is best known for his action hero roles in blockbuster films such as Lethal Weapon and The Passion of the Christ.
Following his breakout role in the Mad Max action film series that first hit screens in 1979 Gibson shot to fame on an international level which led to a multitude of starring roles in films including Gallipoli, The Bounty and Hamlet. His ongoing success as a Hollywood actor resulted in Gibson directing, producing and starring in the 1995 film Braveheart and saw him honoured Academy Awards for both Best Director and Best Picture. In recent years Gibson has enjoyed further success directing the film Hacksaw Ridge in 2014. Critically acclaimed, it has enjoyed a host of award nominations including Golden Globes and Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture.
Among his many accolades, Gibson has also received an Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema Award by the Irish Film & Television Awards in 2009 and was named Sexiest Man Alive by People Magazine in 1985. For his ongoing work as a renowned actor, Gibson was also presented with an Honorary Fellowship in Performing Arts at the Limkokwing University that has a significant presence across Africa, Asia and Europe. An active Philanthropist throughout his acting career, Gibson has supported charities including the El Mirador Basin Project that works to protect the last remaining virgin rain forest in Central America. Gibson also works with the charity Angels At Risk that educates teens about alcohol and drug abuse.
