Melanie Fiona Hallim was born on July 4, 1983, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Guyanese immigrant parents of Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, and Portuguese descent. Growing up in a musically inclined household, she started writing songs at 16, drawing inspiration from artists like Whitney Houston and The Ronettes. Her professional career began in 2002 as a member of the Canadian R&B trio X-Quisite, which released a self-titled album in 2003 and earned a Juno Award nomination for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year in 2004. Following the group’s disbandment in 2005, Fiona briefly formed the duo The Renaissance with Drake, performing at Toronto nightclubs, and co-wrote songs for artists such as Rihanna and Kardinal Offishall, while also recording under the stage name Syren Hall.
In 2007, Steve Rifkind signed Fiona to SRC Records and Universal Motown, leading to the release of her debut album, “The Bridge,” in June 2009. The album featured the breakout hit “It Kills Me,” which topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for 10 weeks and earned her a Grammy Award nomination. Other notable singles from “The Bridge” included “Give It to Me Right” and “Monday Morning,” the latter becoming a significant hit in Europe. Her success continued with her second studio album, “The MF Life,” released in 2012, which peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard 200. That same year, she won two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Song for her collaboration with CeeLo Green on “Fool for You.”
Throughout her career, Melanie Fiona has demonstrated consistent artistic evolution and maintained a strong presence in the R&B genre. She toured with major artists like Kanye West and Alicia Keys, participated in charitable initiatives such as “We Are the World 25 for Haiti,” and launched her motherhood brand, Melly Belly. Although her planned “Awake” album was ultimately scrapped, she has continued to release new music, including singles like “Bite the Bullet” and, more recently, “Say Yes” and “I Choose You” from her upcoming 2025 EP, “Say Yes.”
