Gilbert launched Modern Prairie, a lifestyle brand co-founded with Nicole Haase, to provide heirloom-quality products and build a community for women, with a specific focus on connecting and empowering older women. Melissa Gilbert began her career as a child actress in the late 1960s, appearing in numerous commercials and guest roles on television. Her breakthrough came in 1974 when she was cast as Laura Ingalls Wilder in the NBC series “Little House on the Prairie.” This role, which she held for nine years until 1983, established her as a prominent figure in American television. During this period, Gilbert also showcased her versatility in TV films such as “The Diary of Anne Frank” (1980) and “The Miracle Worker” (1979), portraying complex characters that earned her critical acclaim. After “Little House on the Prairie” concluded, Gilbert continued her acting career primarily in television films, demonstrating a sustained presence in the industry. She adopted a child, Michael Boxleitner, in 1995, named in honor of her long-time mentor and co-star Michael Landon.
Beyond her acting achievements, Gilbert expanded her influence within the entertainment industry. She served as president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) from 2001 to 2005, a period marked by her leadership in a contentious candidacy against Valerie Harper and a successful re-election. In 2012, she participated in “Dancing with the Stars,” further engaging with a wider audience. In recent years, Gilbert has diversified into entrepreneurship, launching Modern Prairie in 2022, a lifestyle brand aimed at fostering community among women. She has also authored several books, including memoirs like “Prairie Tale” (2009) and “Back to the Prairie: A Home Remade, A Life Rediscovered” (2022), a children’s book, and a cookbook.
Throughout her career, Gilbert has received significant recognition, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985 and an induction into the Western Performers Hall of Fame in 1998. Her work has earned her multiple awards and nominations, such as a Primetime Emmy nomination in 1980 for “The Miracle Worker” and several Young Artist Awards. Her consistent contributions to television, film, and advocacy for actors have solidified her status as a notable figure in American culture.
