Michael S. Medved was born on October 3, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended public schools in San Diego and Los Angeles before enrolling at Yale University at age 16 as a National Merit Scholar. He earned his B.A. with honors in American History in 1969 and subsequently attended Yale Law School. Following his academic pursuits, Medved embarked on a career in writing and political consulting. He worked as a speechwriter for Joseph Duffey’s U.S. Senate campaign and later for Congressman Ron Dellums. His early career also included work in advertising, where he coordinated recruitment campaigns for police departments in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley.
Medved’s writing career gained prominence with his first bestseller at age 26, “What Really Happened to the Class of ’65?” (1976), which explored the post-graduation lives of his high school classmates and later became an NBC television series. He further explored political themes in “The Shadow Presidents: The Secret History of the Chief Executives and Their Top Aides” (1979), a comprehensive study of White House assistants that included interviews with chiefs of staff from presidents Truman to Ford. This work solidified his connection to politics, leading to his affiliation with the Republican Party and campaigning for Ronald Reagan in 1980. His 1982 book, “Hospital: The Hidden Lives of a Medical Center Staff,” garnered national attention with discussions on ABC’s ‘Nightline’ and ‘Good Morning America’.
Transitioning into film criticism, Medved co-authored several satirical books with his brother Harry Medved, including “The Fifty Worst Films of All Time” (1979) and “The Golden Turkey Awards” (1980). From 1984 to 1996, he co-hosted the weekly movie review show ‘Sneak Previews’, and served as chief film critic for the ‘New York Post’ for five years. In 1996, Medved launched his syndicated talk radio show, ‘The Michael Medved Show’, which became a significant platform for his commentary on current events, politics, and pop culture. His influence in radio led to his consistent inclusion in ‘Talkers Magazine’s’ “Heavy Hundred” list of most important American talk show hosts. He is also a regular columnist for ‘USA Today’ and has contributed op-ed pieces to ‘The Wall Street Journal’. His recent books, “The American Miracle: Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic” (2016) and “God’s Hand on America: Divine Providence in the Modern Era” (2019), explore themes of American history and divine intervention.
