Michaella McCollum was named as part of the line-up for the reality television series 'Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins', which aims to push participants both physically and mentally.
Michaella McCollum, originally from Dungannon, Northern Ireland, gained public attention on August 6, 2013, when she was arrested at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru. At 20 years old, she and Melissa Reid were found attempting to smuggle 12 kg (26 lbs) of cocaine, valued at approximately £1.5 million. The two women, who had met in Ibiza, were subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to drug smuggling. They were sentenced to six years and eight months of imprisonment in the Ancon 2 jail. During her incarceration, McCollum engaged in initiatives to improve prison life, taking up training positions in beauty therapy and becoming a delegate who liaised with prison authorities. She stated these actions were to prove her capability to stand up for herself.
McCollum was granted early release on March 31, 2016, after serving two years and three months of her sentence, under new Peruvian legislation. She returned to Dublin, Ireland, on August 13, 2016. Following her release, McCollum became vocal about her experiences, documenting her journey into and out of crime. She authored the book “You’ll Never See Daylight Again,” which details her time in prison. Her experiences also formed the basis of the five-part documentary “High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule,” released in 2021 and later available on Netflix in 2022. Michaella emphasized a significant shift in her perspective, particularly regarding drug use and naive trust in others, attributing her current mindset to her time in prison and becoming a mother.
In the years following her return, McCollum embarked on a new educational path. Initially, she considered studying criminology but found it too close to her past experiences. She later pursued a different academic direction, graduating in July 2023 from the University of Ulster with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Business Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services. Her career progression includes participating in the television program “Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins” in July 2025, which further highlights her public engagement and personal development.
