Mike Summerbee became an integral part of one of Manchester City’s most successful eras after joining the club in 1965 for £35,000. During his debut 1965-66 season, he played in all 52 league and cup matches, scoring 10 goals and helping the team secure promotion from the Second Division. He was a key figure in the squad that won the Football League First Division title in 1967-68, notably scoring the opening goal in the decisive match against Newcastle. His impactful performances also led to his England international debut in 1968, and he went on to earn eight caps for his country between 1968 and 1973, scoring one goal.
His enduring legacy in the sport was recognized with his induction into the Manchester City Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2006, Summerbee accepted the pivotal role of Club Ambassador for Manchester City, a position he continues to fulfill, actively advocating for the club and its community initiatives. His profound impact on English football received further national recognition in 2013 when he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame. More recently, in the 2022 Birthday Honours, he was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in recognition of his extensive services to football and his philanthropic endeavors.
