Miroslav Barnyashev

Miroslav Petrov Barnyashev was born on December 25, 1985, in Plovdiv, People’s Republic of Bulgaria. Growing up, he attended a sports school, engaging in various athletic pursuits including rowing, powerlifting, and sambo. His aspirations led him to relocate to the United States in the mid-2000s to pursue a career in professional wrestling. He initially settled in Virginia before moving to Torrance, California, where he received his wrestling training from notable figures like Gangrel and Rikishi at the Knokx Pro Wrestling Academy. Barnyashev made his professional debut on November 22, 2008, in New Wave Pro Wrestling, competing under the ring name “Miroslav Makaraov.”

Barnyashev’s career trajectory gained significant momentum in September 2010 when he signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He was assigned to their developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), where he adopted the ring name Alexander Rusev. During his time in developmental, he faced setbacks including an anterior cruciate ligament tear and a broken neck, periods he utilized to study Muay Thai in Thailand. FCW was rebranded as NXT in 2012, and Rusev continued to hone his skills there until 2014. It was during this period that he formed a pivotal on-screen partnership with Lana, who served as his “social ambassador,” a pairing that drew comparisons to characters from “Rocky IV.” He showcased his abilities against several main roster wrestlers, including Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Sin Cara, in matches broadcast on NXT.

He made his main roster debut at the 2014 Royal Rumble. Throughout his tenure with WWE, adopting a Russophillic, anti-American persona as ‘Rusev,’ he became a three-time WWE United States Champion. One of his most notable periods was the “Rusev Day” gimmick, which unexpectedly garnered significant fan popularity despite its villainous origins. In April 2020, Rusev was released from his WWE contract. He then joined All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in September 2020, under the ring name Miro, where he became a one-time AEW TNT Champion before ultimately returning to WWE in April 2025. Miroslav Barnyashev has also expanded his presence beyond wrestling into acting, appearing in films and television series, and engages with fans through his Twitch gaming channel.
