Mohammed Siraj was born on March 13, 1994, in Hyderabad, Telangana. His early life involved humble beginnings, with his father working as an auto-rickshaw driver. Siraj started playing club cricket at the age of 19, having first picked up a tennis ball to bowl at 16. His talent was evident early on, as he took 9 wickets in his very first match for his uncle’s team in the Hyderabad Cricket Association.
Siraj’s professional career began with his first-class debut on November 15, 2015, for Hyderabad in the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy. He quickly established himself as a formidable bowler, becoming the leading wicket-taker for Hyderabad in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy with 41 wickets at an average of 18.92. His domestic success continued, leading him to be the highest wicket-taker in the 2017–18 Vijay Hazare Trophy with 23 dismissals. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for India on November 4, 2017, against New Zealand, securing his first T20I wicket with Kane Williamson. His One Day International (ODI) debut followed on January 15, 2019, against Australia, and he earned his Test debut for India on December 26, 2020, also against Australia, where he took his first Test wicket, Marnus Labuschagne. He achieved his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket in January 2021.
His career includes notable achievements such as becoming the No. 1 ODI Bowler in ICC ODI Rankings in January 2023. In the 2023 Asia Cup final, he delivered a record-breaking performance, becoming the joint fastest bowler to take a 6-wicket haul in ODIs and the first Indian to take 4 wickets in an over. He was a key member of the Indian squad that won the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup. In franchise cricket, Siraj made his IPL debut in 2017 with Sunrisers Hyderabad and later became a mainstay for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In 2020, he made IPL history by bowling back-to-back maiden overs in a single match. In November 2024, he was acquired by Gujarat Titans for a significant sum in the 2025 IPL Mega Auction, highlighting his consistent value in the sport. Off the field, he was appointed an honorary Deputy Superintendent of Police in Hyderabad in October 2024 and launched his own restaurant, “JOHARFA,” in July 2025.
