Murray Bartlett was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, around 1971. He later moved with his family to Perth, Western Australia, at the age of four. He pursued his education in the arts, graduating from the drama program at John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle in 1988, followed by a degree in Performing Arts (Acting) from Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1991. Early in his career, Bartlett appeared in various Australian television productions, including a recurring role as Luke Foster in “Neighbours” in 1993 and in the series “headLand.” In 2000, he relocated to the U.S., where he secured guest roles in notable series like HBO’s “Sex and the City” in 2002 and a recurring role as D.K. in the Sci-Fi Channel series “Farscape.”
Bartlett’s career progression saw him take on a series regular role as Cyrus Foley in the CBS daytime soap opera “Guiding Light” from March 2007 to September 2009. A significant turning point came with his portrayal of Dominic “Dom” Basaluzzo in the HBO comedy-drama series “Looking” from 2014 to 2015, a role he reprised in “Looking: The Movie” in 2016. He continued to build his profile with a central role as Michael ‘Mouse’ Tolliver in the Netflix revival of “Tales of the City” in 2019. In 2021, Bartlett achieved widespread acclaim for his performance as Armond, the luxury resort manager, in the first season of the HBO satire comedy series “The White Lotus.” This role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
Following his success in “The White Lotus,” Bartlett took on further prominent roles, including Nick De Noia in the Hulu miniseries “Welcome to Chippendales” (2022–2023) and Frank in the critically acclaimed episode “Long, Long Time” of the HBO drama series “The Last of Us” in 2023. These performances garnered him additional Primetime Emmy Award nominations, solidifying his reputation for diverse and impactful acting. Bartlett has also appeared in the Apple TV+ series “Physical” (2022) as Vinnie Green and is set to return for the second season of the Hulu anthology series “Nine Perfect Strangers” (2025). He is also involved in upcoming film projects such as “Opus” (2025) and “O’Dessa” (2025).
