Mustafa Suleyman

Mustafa Suleyman, born in London in 1984, began his entrepreneurial journey early, contributing to the establishment of the Muslim Youth Helpline, a mental health support service, as a teenager in August 2001. He later worked as a policy officer focusing on human rights for the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, before founding Reos Partners, a consultancy specializing in systemic change and conflict resolution. His work at Reos Partners included collaborations with organizations such as the United Nations and the World Wide Fund for Nature, indicating an early focus on addressing complex societal challenges.

In 2010, Suleyman co-founded DeepMind Technologies, an artificial intelligence and machine learning company that quickly became a leader in the AI sector. DeepMind was acquired by Google in 2014 for an estimated £400 million, marking one of Google’s largest European acquisitions. Following this acquisition, Suleyman assumed the role of head of applied AI at DeepMind, where he was responsible for integrating its advanced technology into various Google products. A notable achievement during his tenure was leading the DeepMind Health initiative, launched in February 2016, which focused on developing clinician-led technology to enhance healthcare services for the National Health Service (NHS) and other partners. He also oversaw efforts to apply DeepMind’s algorithms to reduce cooling energy in Google’s data centers, achieving up to a 40% reduction in cooling energy use and a 15% improvement in overall energy efficiency by 2016.

After his time at Google, Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI in March 2022, an AI-first company aiming to redefine human-computer interaction, where he served as CEO. Under his leadership, Inflection AI launched “Pi,” a personal AI chatbot designed for conversational dialogue and emotional support. In March 2024, Suleyman was appointed Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI, a new consumer AI unit at Microsoft, where he leads the development of products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge, focusing on building state-of-the-art AI models and creating an AI companion for everyone. He is also the author of “The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century’s Greatest Dilemma” (2023), which explores the societal impacts of AI. Suleyman sits on the board of The Economist and is a Senior Fellow at The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School.
