About

Nedra Glover Tawwab, an American mental health therapist, social worker, and writer, was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She pursued her education at Wayne State University, earning her undergraduate degree in 2005 and a master’s of social work degree in 2007. Following her licensure as an LCSW, she initiated her therapy practice in Detroit. In 2009, she relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she established and currently owns Kaleidoscope Counseling, a group therapy practice. Her practice focuses on helping individuals cultivate healthy relationships through the implementation of boundaries, a philosophy she believes is crucial for addressing most relationship issues.

Tawwab gained significant public recognition through her mental health-related posts on Instagram, where she created an account in 2017. Her follower count grew steadily, experiencing a substantial increase after being featured in a New York Times article. By October 2023, her Instagram following reached 1.9 million, attributed to her concise and insightful content on various mental health topics, including forgiveness and realistic goal setting. She specializes in the area of healthy relationships and the importance of boundaries in maintaining personal safety and comfort within these connections. She has been recognized in Time’s 2024 list of influential people in health.

Her expertise led her to author her first book, “Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself,” released in March 2021 by Penguin Random House. This book achieved New York Times Best Seller status, remaining on the list for four weeks. Subsequently, she published an accompanying workbook and a picture book for young readers, “What Makes You Happy?” which addresses people-pleasing and finding one’s voice. Tawwab’s work often highlights the necessity of assertive communication and the societal tendency to mislabel such honesty as rudeness. She emphasizes that expressing one’s needs, even if uncomfortable for others, is vital for personal freedom and healthier interactions. She resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her family.
