About

Nelson Richard DeMille was born on August 23, 1943, in New York City. He later moved with his family to Elmont, Long Island, where he grew up and attended Elmont Memorial High School. After spending three years at Hofstra University, DeMille joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a first lieutenant in the First Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. During his military service, he earned several commendations, including the Air Medal, Bronze Star, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Upon returning from military service, DeMille resumed his studies at Hofstra University, where he completed a degree in political science and history. His writing career began in 1974 with “The Sniper,” part of his Joe Ryker series, initially published under the pseudonym Jack Cannon. A significant turning point in his career was the publication of his 1978 novel, “By the Rivers of Babylon,” which established him as a prominent author in the suspense and thriller genres. Throughout his career, DeMille authored more than thirty novels, with seven achieving the status of #1 New York Times bestsellers.

DeMille’s notable works include “Plum Island,” “The Charm School,” and “The General’s Daughter,” the latter of which was adapted into a major film starring John Travolta in 1999. He also co-authored novels such as “Mayday” with Thomas Block, and “The Deserter” and “Blood Lines” with his son, Alex DeMille, fostering a multi-generational legacy in fiction writing.
