Nick Mattoon is a former professional ski jumper who competed on the international circuit, achieving notable results in FIS and Continental Cup events, now sharing his expertise as a coach.
Backcountry is the original sponsor of USA Ski Jumping and provides ongoing support, enabling USA Ski Jumping to run its program.
Born on August 4, 1995, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Nick Mattoon began his ski jumping career at the age of four with the Eau Claire Flying Eagles, encouraged by his father, Dan, a former US Ski Team jumper. Initially involved in nordic combined skiing, he transitioned to special jumping after the 2011 season. His early career saw him become a Junior National winner and a member of five Central Junior National Teams. Mattoon’s dedication to the sport was evident through his high level of fitness and hard work, which contributed to his early achievements.
Mattoon’s international career began to take shape with his membership in the USA Junior World Nordic team, leading to extensive travel and competition in Europe. In March 2013, he achieved his longest jump of 122.5 meters at Whistler Olympic Park. His notable international results include a 9th place finish in a FIS Cup in Notodden, Norway, in December 2013, and a 16th place in a Continental Cup in Erzurum, Turkey, in February 2017. He also tied for third in the Fred Harris Memorial ski jumping tournament in Brattleboro, VT, in February 2013, and secured a 30th place in an FIS Cup in Oberstdorf, Germany, within a field of 81 competitors. Domestically, Mattoon was a two-time U.S. Cup Champion and placed third at the U.S. National Championships in 2015.
After a period away from competitive ski jumping, Mattoon returned to the sport for events like the Silver Mine Invitational, noting the natural ease of returning to the hill. During his hiatus, he began a full-time job and took on a coaching role for the Eau Claire based Flying Eagles Ski Club. He continues to engage with the ski jumping community, maintaining his connection to the sport through coaching and occasional competitive appearances. Mattoon’s career reflects a sustained commitment to ski jumping, from his youth through to his professional achievements and current role as a mentor.
