Nicolas de Barry was born in Paris, France, in 1948. He initially pursued academic studies, earning a PhD in sociology and politics from Sorbonne University, Paris. During his early career, he published several books under the name Nicolas Martin, covering topics such as ‘La Prusse rouge’ (1973), ‘La Méditerranée’ (1974), and ‘Senghor et le monde’ (1979). He also authored ‘La France fortifiée’ and ‘L’armée parle’. His diverse intellectual background earned him a “Prix d’Histoire de l’Académie Française” before he transitioned into the field of perfumery.
His journey into perfumery began in 1992, influenced by encounters with notable figures like Edmond Roudnitska (creator of Diorissimo and Eau Sauvage), Françoise Marin of Givaudan-Roure Perfumery School, and Rodrique Romani. This shift marked a significant turning point in his career. He established himself as a perfumer, serving high society in Brazil by creating exclusive fragrances. In France, he acquired the Château de Frileuse near Blois in the Loire Valley, where he set up a perfume atelier and a garden of scents. He further committed to sharing his knowledge by organizing workshops and Master Classes globally, in addition to establishing the non-profit INSTITUT NICOLAS DE BARRY for artistic perfumery.
Nicolas de Barry is also a published author in perfumery and cosmetics. His works include ‘L’ABCdaire du parfum’ (translated into Portuguese and Italian), ‘Des parfums à faire soi-même’ (translated into Portuguese), ‘L’Inde des parfums’, and ‘L’ABCdaire de l’huile d’olive’. He has held visiting professorships at Montpellier University and has served as the general secretary of the ‘Prix International du Parfum’ since 2000. For his contributions to culture, he was awarded “Chevalier des Arts et Lettres” by Frédéric Mitterrand, the French Minister of Culture.
