United States Nik Dodani has established himself as an actor, writer, and comedian, known for his roles in television and film, as well as his advocacy work.
Dodani is a design and production activist with Art Not War, a cultural impact and PR firm.
During the 2016 presidential election, Dodani was a producer for MoveOn, where he organized a political comedy tour called 'Laughter Trumps Hate'.
Nik Dodani, born on December 19, 1993, in Dallas, Texas, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, is an American actor, writer, and comedian. His career began in Phoenix-area community theater, with his first notable role as Zero in a staged production of ‘Holes’. He later pursued an education in politics at Occidental College in Los Angeles before fully committing to his entertainment career. Dodani made his television debut in 2014 in season 2 of HBO’s ‘The Comeback’ starring Lisa Kudrow. He gained wider recognition for his role as Zahid in the Netflix comedy-drama series ‘Atypical’ (2017–2021) and as Pat Patel in the CBS sitcom revival ‘Murphy Brown’ (2018). His film work includes appearances in ‘Alex Strangelove’ (2018), ‘Escape Room’ (2019), and the film adaptation of ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ (2021), where his character was re-conceived as Jared Kalwani. In 2024, Dodani appeared in ‘Twisters’. He is slated to lead the ensemble of the Warner Brothers and Max comedy ‘The Parenting’, set to release in 2025.
Beyond acting, Dodani has expanded his career into stand-up comedy, making his late-night debut on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ in 2018. He is also a writer and producer, having penned the screenplay for the film adaptation of Rakesh Satyal’s novel ‘Blue Boy’ (2024), which also marked his directorial debut. In 2022, he launched his own production banner, Cosmic Pomegranate, with Joey Long. His work extends to voice acting in animated programs such as Nickelodeon’s ‘Big Nate’, Disney’s ‘The Owl House’ and ‘Hailey’s On It!’, and the Disney animated film ‘Strange World’ (2022). Dodani made his Broadway debut as Ogie in ‘Waitress’ in late 2021 and co-produced ‘Life of Pi’ on Broadway in 2023, contributing to its AAPI community outreach initiative. He is openly gay and of Indian Sindhi descent.
Dodani is also a dedicated activist, known for his political engagement. During the 2016 presidential election, he produced ‘Laughter Trumps Hate’ for MoveOn. He has worked as a communications consultant and graphic designer for political campaigns. In 2019, he co-founded The Salon, a network dedicated to mentoring and supporting South Asian creatives in film and television. His advocacy efforts include organizing within the South Asian community for the Joe Biden 2020 presidential campaign and actively participating in the Black Lives Matter movement.
