Nikki Sanchez is an academic, Indigenous media maker, and environmental educator who provides insights on decolonization, environmental justice, and social equity. After completing the 8-part documentary series ‘RISE’ for VICELAND, which premiered at Sundance in February 2017 and focused on global Indigenous resurgence, Nikki Sanchez has dedicated over 15 years to social justice and Indigenous rights work. An accomplished academic, she holds a Master’s degree in Indigenous Governance and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. with a research focus on emerging visual media technology as it relates to Indigenous ontology.
As a prominent educator, Sanchez is the creator and director of ‘Decolonize Together,’ a collective of Indigenous women that has spent five years offering decolonial and anti-racism workshops and curriculum to universities, school boards, corporations, and NGOs. She further demonstrated her leadership as the managing editor of ‘Spirits of the Coast.’ Her insightful writing on Indigenous, environmental, and social justice issues has been featured in respected publications such as Last Real Indians, Loose Lips Magazine, Intercontinental Cry, and The Hundreds, reaching diverse audiences with critical perspectives. Building on her expertise and commitment, Nikki Sanchez serves as a valued board member for several key organizations, including the Sierra Club BC, BC Womens Hospital, and Photographers Without Borders. She continues her advanced academic contributions as a doctoral fellow at the Center for Religion and Society at the University of Victoria, further solidifying her position as an influential voice in Indigenous governance, environmental justice, and social equity.
