About

Nina Teicholz, born on May 7, 1965, in Berkeley, California, is an American journalist, author, and researcher known for her work in nutrition science. She pursued her education at Stanford University, earning a degree in American Studies, and later completed her master’s in Latin American Studies at Oxford University. In 2024, she earned a Ph.D. in nutrition with a focus on evidence-based nutrition policy from the University of Reading. Before focusing on nutrition, Teicholz worked as a reporter for National Public Radio and contributed to publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The New Yorker.

Her career took a significant turn when she investigated dietary fats, leading to her New York Times bestselling book, “The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet,” published in 2014. The book critiques established dietary guidelines, particularly those related to saturated fat, and suggests that traditional foods like meat and dairy are safe and beneficial. “The Big Fat Surprise” was recognized as a top non-fiction book by The Wall Street Journal and The Economist, and received positive reviews from prestigious medical journals including The Lancet, The BMJ, and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Following the book’s success, Teicholz became a prominent voice in the nutrition debate, founding The Nutrition Coalition in 2015.

As Executive Director of The Nutrition Coalition from 2015 to 2019, Teicholz championed transparent and evidence-based nutrition policy. Her efforts led to her encouraging Congress in 2015 to mandate a review of the Dietary Guidelines process by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), which resulted in a two-part report with 11 reform recommendations in 2017. She further encouraged a follow-up report by NASEM in 2019, delivered in 2022 and 2023, to evaluate progress. Teicholz has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed papers documenting issues with the US Dietary Guidelines, such as the lack of rigorous methodology, ignored scientific evidence, and conflicts of interest within advisory committees. Her work continues to advocate for dietary patterns that address chronic diseases like obesity and diabetes based on rigorous data.
