Nolan Kay Bushnell was born on February 5, 1943, in Clearfield, Utah. He developed an early interest in electronics and games, spending his college years working at Lagoon Amusement Park, where he observed customer engagement with arcade electro-mechanical games. Bushnell attended Utah State University to study engineering and business before transferring to the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. This period provided foundational insights into both the technical and business aspects of entertainment, fueling his future entrepreneurial endeavors.
After graduating, Bushnell moved to California and worked as an electrical engineer at Ampex, where he met Ted Dabney. In 1970, they formed Syzygy and developed an arcade game called ‘Computer Space,’ a clone of ‘Spacewar!,’ which, despite its commercial failure, laid the groundwork for their next venture. In 1972, Bushnell and Dabney founded Atari, Inc. They developed ‘Pong,’ a simplified electronic tennis game that became a significant commercial success. This marked a turning point, as ‘Pong’ popularized video games and established Atari as a leading company in the nascent video game industry. Bushnell later bought out Dabney’s share of Atari in 1973.
As Atari expanded, Bushnell foresaw the need for programmable home consoles. In 1976, he sold Atari to Warner Communications for $28 million to secure funding for the Atari Video Computer System (Atari VCS), later known as the Atari 2600. Despite its eventual success, disagreements with Warner led to Bushnell’s departure from Atari in early 1979. Prior to leaving, he negotiated the rights to Pizza Time Theatre, which evolved into the Chuck E. Cheese’s chain. This venture combined pizza with arcade games and animatronic entertainment, reflecting Bushnell’s vision for family entertainment. Over his career, he has founded more than 20 companies, including Catalyst Technologies, uWink, and BrainRush, consistently exploring new frontiers in technology and entertainment.
