Patrick Mouratoglou, born on June 8, 1970, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, developed a passion for tennis at a young age with aspirations of becoming a professional player. Despite his parents’ encouragement toward academic pursuits, his determination led him to establish his first tennis academy in the Paris region in 1996, alongside veteran coach Bob Brett. This venture, initially named the Bob Brett Academy, was a stepping stone for Mouratoglou to provide aspiring young talents with opportunities he felt he lacked in his youth. The academy later became the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy and relocated to Biot on the French Riviera in 2016. His coaching career on the professional tour commenced in 1999, notably taking on 14-year-old Marcos Baghdatis who, under Mouratoglou’s guidance, rose to become a junior world No. 1 and reached the 2006 Australian Open final.
His methodology is characterized by a personalized approach, assessing each player’s unique physiological, psychological, and environmental factors to maximize their potential. From 2007 to 2012, Mouratoglou gained further prominence by coaching players such as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Aravane Rezaï, Yanina Wickmayer, Laura Robson, Jérémy Chardy, and Grigor Dimitrov, helping many achieve career-high rankings and significant tournament victories. A pivotal moment in his career arrived in 2012 when he began coaching Serena Williams. Under his tenure, Williams secured 10 Grand Slam titles, an Olympic gold medal, multiple WTA Tour Championships, and reclaimed her world No. 1 ranking, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier coach. This partnership continued for a decade, ending in 2022.
Beyond coaching, Mouratoglou has diversified his contributions to tennis. He founded the Champ’seed Foundation in 2014 to support talented players from modest backgrounds, including Coco Gauff, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Holger Rune. In 2020, he co-created the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), an innovative exhibition league designed to broaden tennis’s appeal to younger audiences. He has also served as a sports commentator for ESPN and Eurosport, and authored books like “Éduquer pour gagner” and “Le coach.” His continued work across coaching, philanthropy, and media highlights his sustained influence and commitment to the evolution of tennis.
