Paul Merson was probed by the Advertising Standards Authority for misconduct while promoting and advertising Supreme CBD, a brand owned by ex-boxer Anthony Fowler. The investigation concluded that his social media posts were commercial and made unlawful medical claims about CBD.
Paul Charles Merson, born on March 20, 1968, in Harlesden, North West London, began his football career as an apprentice with Arsenal in 1984. After a loan spell at Brentford, he made his debut for Arsenal in November 1986. Merson quickly established himself as a key player under manager George Graham, contributing to Arsenal’s success, including two Football League Championship titles, an FA Cup, a Football League Cup, and a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. His performance led to him being voted PFA Young Player of the Year in 1989. Merson represented England 21 times, participating in UEFA Euro 1992 and the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
In 1997, Merson moved to Middlesbrough for a record fee for a non-Premiership club, helping them achieve promotion to the Premier League. He then joined Aston Villa in 1998, where he became club captain and played in the 2000 FA Cup final. In 2002, he moved to Portsmouth, captaining them to the First Division Championship and promotion to the Premier League. He later served as player-manager for Walsall from 2004 to 2006. Post-retirement from playing, Merson has built a media career as a pundit for Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday and co-hosted ‘Fantasy Football Club’. Merson has been open about his past struggles with addictions to alcohol, cocaine, and gambling, and actively speaks about mental health awareness.
Throughout his career, Merson played a total of 626 league games, scoring 127 goals across various clubs including Arsenal, Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Portsmouth, and Walsall. His career achievements include multiple team honors and individual accolades such as selections for the PFA Team of the Year in 1997–98, 2002–03, and 2004–05.
