About

Paul Jamaine Washington Jr. was born on August 23, 1998, in Louisville, Kentucky. His family relocated to St. Louis and Chicago before settling in Frisco, Texas. Washington attended Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, with a brief period at Lone Star High School in Frisco, before transferring to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. During his junior year at Findlay Prep, he averaged 16.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. He also played for his AAU team, Team Penny, sponsored by former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway, on the Nike EYBL circuit. As a senior, Washington maintained averages of 19.6 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. His high school career culminated in selections to both the 2017 Jordan Brand Classic and McDonald’s All-American Game.

Washington committed to the University of Kentucky for college basketball, signing his letter of intent in November 2016. In his freshman season, he played through a pinkie injury, averaging 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Following his freshman year, he initially declared for the NBA draft but later announced his return to Kentucky for his sophomore season. After Kentucky’s loss in the 2019 NCAA men’s basketball tournament, Washington declared for the 2019 NBA draft, where he was projected as a first-round pick. He was drafted 12th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2019 NBA draft.

Washington officially signed with the Hornets on July 3, 2019. He made his NBA debut on October 23, 2019, scoring 27 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block in a 126–125 win over the Chicago Bulls, setting an NBA record for most three-pointers in a debut with seven. On September 15, 2020, he was named to the 2019–20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team. During his tenure with the Hornets, he recorded career-highs of 42 points on February 28, 2021, against the Sacramento Kings, and 43 points on March 28, 2023, against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He re-signed with the Hornets on a three-year, $48 million contract on August 29, 2023. On February 8, 2024, Washington was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, contributing to the team’s run to the 2024 NBA Finals. He signed a four-year, $88.76 million extension with the Mavericks on September 10, 2025.
