Peter Attia was born on March 19, 1973, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Coptic Egyptian immigrant parents. He began his academic journey by earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and applied mathematics from Queen’s University at Kingston in 1996. He then pursued medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine from Stanford University School of Medicine in 2001. Following medical school, Attia entered a residency in general surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, from 2001 to 2006. During this period, he also spent two years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a surgical oncology fellow at the National Cancer Institute, where his research focused on immune-based therapies for melanoma.
After his time at Johns Hopkins and the NIH, Attia transitioned to the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, working in the Palo Alto office as a member of both the Corporate Risk Practice and Healthcare Practice. This experience broader his perspectives before he returned to the medical field with a focus on longevity. In 2014, he established a private clinic dedicated to longevity medicine, applying the principles of Medicine 3.0 to help patients extend both their lifespan and healthspan. His work in this area led him to create the blog “The Eating Academy,” later known as “War on Insulin” and now peterattiamd.com, which delves into topics such as nutrition, physical activity, and longevity.
Attia further expanded his reach by launching “The Peter Attia Drive” podcast, which has garnered over 100 million downloads and features interviews with experts on subjects ranging from exercise and nutritional biochemistry to cardiovascular health and mental well-being. In 2023, he authored the #1 New York Times Bestseller, “Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity,” co-written with Bill Gifford. He was also an advisor for Moonwalk Biosciences (August 2022 – present) and Virta Health (August 2016 – present) and was named in Time’s 2024 list of influential people in health. In 2025, he co-founded Biograph with John Hering, a preventive health and diagnostics clinic in New York City aimed at redefining healthy aging.
